Top Ten Favorite Fantasy Authors

Most people have a favorite author, but do most people have a favorite fantasy author?

I’ve decided to create a list of my top ten favorite fantasy authors, in as best of an order as possible. This is a continuing and evolving list, so it could change by the time I read my next fantasy. Things can get added, replaced and moved. But for now, the list below is current.

This is just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and belief of which books are better or worse than others. I may not have added a book you think I should have or I may have added one that you believe is terrible. But, please remember, I haven’t read every fantasy book and series out there and this list is only limited to ten spots. So, don’t post any negative comments, but if you have any recommendations or would like to have a conversation about any of the books listed or not, please feel free to comment below! That’s part of why I created this list, to have an open and neutral conversation about a topic that many of us like, fantasy.

Also, this list is restricted to only those books that take place outside of Earth, including Earth as a parallel or alternative universe. That’s why you won’t see Harry Potter on this list even though it is fantasy.

My top ten favorite fantasy authors…

  1. George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire)
  2. Andrzej Sapkowski (Witcher Saga)
  3. Christopher Paolini (Inheritance Cycle)
  4. Jane Yolen (Pit Dragon Chronicles)
  5. Brent Weeks (The Night Angel Trilogy)
  6. Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman (Dragonlance Chronicles)
  7. John Flanagan (Rangers Apprentice)
  8. Michael J. Sullivan (Legends of the First Empire)
  9. Scott Lynch (Gentleman Bastard Sequence)
  10. J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit)

The information in the parenthesis is the name of the book or series that introduced me to the author and also what made them my favorites. Almost all of the authors listed have other books that have been published.

There are authors that came close to making my list and others that had no chance of making it.

Tell me what you think below!

Support your favorite authors by buying their books and telling more people about them.

Until next time,

TC Michael

  1. Great list! I love all the authors and series mentioned.
I also adore David Eddings (Elenium trilogy), Stephen Donaldson (Thomas Covenant),
Kate Forsyth (Witches of Eilenan), Katherine Kerr (Epic Deverry) and Raymond E. Fiest (Riftwar saga).
Were any of these authors that nearly made it onto your list?

    1. Unfortunately no, but Kate Forsyth and Raymond E. Fiest are both on my list of authors to read soon. I’ve heard good things about the Riftwar saga.
